Dojang Etiquette

At the University of Idaho


  1. Bow when entering or exiting the dojang. If you are already in the dojang and a Black Belt enters, come to attention, wait for the Black Belt to acknowledge you and then Bow.
     

  2. Take your shoes off after entering the dojang. Keep your shoes and equipment between  the walls and support beams. Please, keep track of all your items.
     

  3. Students must respond to the instructor and all senior belts with "yes Sir/Ma'am" or "no Sir/Ma'am." Use of  "yeah" and /or "nah" is not an acceptable answer.
     

  4. When class begins, line up quickly and silently with the senior student at the front, right side (facing the instructor) continuing to the left, 3 across, with each lower belt next.
     

  5. Be on time. If you know that you will be late for, or miss the next class please inform the instructor. When late, wait at attention at the front of class. When appropriate the instructor will invite/allow you to join the class.
     

  6. Your dobok (uniform) must be neat, clean and complete (top, bottom, and belt). If no uniform is used, workout clothing needs to be clean and neat.
     

  7. No jewelry is to be worn during class. Jewelry represents a danger to you and the other students.
     

  8. Finger and toenails must be clipped short and clean. Nails represent a danger to you and the other students.
     

  9. No profanity, loss of temper, or horseplay in the dojang. The dojang is a place of sincere effort.
     

  10. No Drinks (except for water/Gatorade) food, gum, chewing or smoking is allowed in the dojang.
     

  11. The instructors reserves the right, where there is noncompliance with these rules of conduct, to reduce test scores, deny testing privileges, temporarily or permanently suspend you from class.
     

  12. Loud clapping of hands by an instructor means to stop the current activity and listen for further instruction.
     

  13. Only practice techniques shown to you by the instructor.
     

  14. After bowing out at the end of class please pick up any equipment used during class.


A Beginning student will block an attack.

An Advanced student will counterattack after blocking.

A Sabomnim does not need to block.
